Artist Statement:

Although my work includes several types of media, I love the unexpected journey of watercolor, with the strong rays of color and value.  I enjoy painting the stories I see in the faces of people.  I enjoy and early morning walk, making the first tracks in the new snow, seeing the birds and flowers arrive in the spring, and a walk in the woods.  The colors and texture of nature inspire my artwork.  My greatest reward is sharing my art with others.

Artist Biography:

My name is LaVonne Forsberg.  I have lived my entire life in Northwest Minnesota.  Living on a farm and then in a small city I have always been close to nature, animals, flowers, water , woods, and four seasons.  These surroundings and memories provide me with a large choice of subjects to create my art work from.

About thirty-five years ago I started painting as a Rosemaler and decorative painter.  In 1982 I began watercolor as my main focus, however I still enjoy working in other mediums such as oil, acrylic, collage and stained glass.

Most of my art education has been by continuously studying with well-known European and American artists.  By studying from many artists I have created my own style.

I have been invited to show my work in several states, and also show my work in galleries and group and individual shows.  My work has found homes in several countries as well as across the United States.

1980- 1992 - Around 1980 I opened an arts and crafts store.  I took many art classes from a variety of professional artists.  I passed my knowledge onto others by teaching classes.  By teaching others I became very familiarized with how I used my paint and brushes.

When my husband and I still had our store up town we bought out some stained glass from an individual who was moving.  We started with makings sun catchers and soon we were doing stained glass windows for the entire front of a church from floor to peek.

1992 – Present - My husband and I moved our business home so I had more freedom to do what I wanted.  I’m now able to concentrate more on my painting and stained glass.  We are currently working on stained glass windows for our own church.  This is the twelfth church we have done windows for.  I draw the window designs and my husband loves to construct them. It is so nice to share in our faith and love of art.

2001 – I was commissioned by the State of Minnesota to design and paint the “White Bottled Gentian & Northern Lights at Old Mill”.  This painting was used for the 2001 Minnesota State Park entrance permit and collectors mugs.

I painted a small desk top buffalo for the Buffalo Roundup in southern MN.   I was told it was sold for over $900.00 and was the highest selling desk top buffalo at that year’s event.  The University of MN Crookston commissioned me to paint three large paintings of their campus.  I’ve designed and constructed stained glass cabinet doors for an entire kitchen.

2011-2012 - Designed and constructed two 28” light globes for the restoration of our local Carnegie Library.  I have been the recipient of a number of awards and recognitions.  My most recent awards include:

Star Artist Award - received a gift of $5000.00 and a beautiful sculpted pulled glass trophy from the NW Minnesota Arts Council – Upper 7 NW counties in t MN.

2nd place at Artists of Minnesota – Professional Category.

Grand Champion at Pennington County Fair

Best of Show - two times in NW Regional Arts Council Annual Spring Show.

My painting “Crystal Bowl with Flowers” was chosen by NW MN Foundation in Bemidji MN to represent Pennington County.

Members Choice Award at Artists of MN for painting “A Man and His Bible”.  I have received several Merit Awards at Artist of MN.
